Old-timey Slang of the Day

A lovely phrase for today:

scratch gravel: to leave quickly. This one is a mid-19th century phrase. I like it a lot. It conjures up images of flying chunks of rock and cartoony fast-moving feet.

"O-kay!"

Check out this freaking awesome Japanese propaganda cartoon from 1934. It's got an evil Mickey Mouse riding a bat that shoots bullets out of its mouth.

Subliminable

An interesting post on Althouse about a possibly intentional, racist, subliminal message in the "3 A.M." ad got me thinking a bit about subliminal messages in other contexts.

A short subliminal roundup:

* Other campaign ads.

*Info on a subliminal message controversy surrounding Disney movies (see Snopes.com for more on this).

*A number of subliminal (and not-so-subliminal) images.

*A piece on research from New Scientist.

*An article from the BBC.

* A skeptical view.

Clearly, further research is needed.

"Association"

I'm sure this will be all over the internets soon and that there isn't much of a reason for a little blog nobody reads like this one to feature it, but I'm going to anyway, just in case you haven't seen it and happen across this blog while randomly surfing the web in the middle of the night. Maybe you will suddenly realize you need some strange, strange, strange animated weirdness. So here's the butt-biting bug. Enjoy.

ADDED: The youtube link is down, thanks to NHK. Here's another version. The subtitles aren't in English on this one--but really, do they need to be?

Cartoon Characters

Hey, some pagans are mad. About what? The Simpsons movie. Oh, of course. Link to article in The Sun.

Great Animation

Here is some great animation. Nina Paley has set some Hindu legends to old-timey bluesy jazz music, and it's beautiful and funny at the same time:
